Fare thee well my dear 20's
I’ve always been a birthday person. I immodestly anticipate them and celebrate with enthusiasm.
This blog isn’t supposed to be about my personal life so much as my adventures in mastering stuff around the house (and being excited about it), but today marks the first day of my 30’s. It sometimes feels like I was born 80-years-old. I appreciate old things and I enjoy conversing with old(er) people. I even choose to listen to Garrison Keillor’s radio show. I have a nostalgia for times I am far from being a part of.
Well, I’ll keep this short and sweet. Thank you 20’s for every success and more so the things I botched, because I’ve patched together a fine foundation for future pursuits in my 30’s. Thank you 20’s for bringing me to this seat.
The newly-instituted Author’s Chair at Austin’s own Ann Richards School for Young Women Leaders, where I did a talk with 6-8th grade girls about what it takes to write a book.
I thank you all for being a part of this day and every day with me.
So, my birthday wish? Do something nice for your public library, a haven that provides endless hours of enjoyment in books, for free. Mine offers the option to either donate books or money.
While I have an exciting HGGH set o’ books giveaway planned for next month, I can’t have such a big day pass without giving away something, so how about I send to one commenter below, two copies of my book. One for you to keep and the other for you to donate to the library or school of your choice.
To enter: Leave a comment telling us what you’re enjoying reading this summer, food, literature or any kinds of books welcome. Winner will be selected via random.org. Please don’t forget to leave your email address in the designated box that asks for it (or I can’t email to tell you you’ve won). I’m closing the giveaway on July 28 at midnight, CST.
p.s. Vive le Bastille!
Congrats to our winner, Debbie from Batavia, IL!
Thanks all for entering and sharing your summer reading lists.

Happy Birthday! I'm enjoying Erik Larsen's "In The Garden of Beasts," courtesy of the Minneapolis Public Library.
We are in the middle of packing the house and moving to a new one, so I haven't had time to read for myself. However, we read to the kids each night and are currently enjoying the "A-Z Mysteries" by Ron Roy, and the "Captain Underpants" series by Dav Pilkey.
Happy Birthday! I usually am reading a Jodi Piccoult book or one of the "Dragon Tatoo" trilogy books, but alas, I have been spending most of my summer reading grad school text books.
Currently reading Barbara Kingsolver's Lacuna, a million food blogs online, and How to Be Your Dog's Best Friend by the monks of new skete. Would love to add your book to that list.
This is a great idea for a giveaway! I am currently getting my master's in library science and hope to work at a public library one day!
Hmm, this summer I have been reading a lot of young adult; finally read The Hunger Games trilogy (amazing!) also The Bartimaeus Trilogy. Currently I am reading "Good Omens", and "The Art of Racing in the Rain".
Happy B-day!
Happy Birthday fellow Cancerian! I too have a July birthday, but I'm already in my 30s, and it's not too bad so far. :)
I've read a wide assortment of books from the library this summer - The Color Purple, Wicked, Better Homes and Gardens You Can Can, Organic Gardening for Dummies, and last but not least, The Hip Girl's Guide to Homemaking, which was great. I made Fridge Pickles using your recipe and they turned out fabulous!
I just borrowed three books from my local library.....Sleeping Naked is Green, Generation Green and The Green Book.....yes there is a theme there.....I want to get back to my journey to simplify.
Alternating between the first of the Game of Thrones books, canning books, crafty books and personal finance books. I must have book ADD.
Happy (belated) Birthday! Careful, the years start to speed up on you. I have two books going on right now, one I just finished reading myself, “365 Thank Yous-The Year a Simple Act of Daily Gratitude Changed My Life” (easy read) and the book on tape the kids & I listen to every day on our way places “Horns & Wrinkles” (weird but makes the kids laugh). I’ve also got several (too many actually) cookbooks checked out from the library so I can find some new favorite recipes. Oh, and I love to read magazines during the summer, good for short breaks, swim lessons, etc. Thanks for all you do to share your knowledge with us!! I will cross my fingers that I will get to donate your book to our local Boise library!!
I just finished John Krakauer's Into the Wild...one of the best books I've read in a long time. Up next is Transcendence, a book about Transcendental Meditation.
I am reading the #15 book in the Stephanie Plum series by Janet Evanovich. Fast, funny quick reading....what a hoot!
