Canning-tacular giveaway: Food in Jars book & Ball Canner Kit
Summer just snuck up on me, and I feel sort of unprepared. Spring lingered longer, rains fell. Blueberries came and went (already).
I live in Texas and it’s summer for about 9 months of the year, so summer isn’t usually a surprise, but that’s enough about my confounding climate zone. It’s nearly officially summer, which means the possibility of preserving wherever you are.
First off, I’d like to start this giveaway out with a small quiz:
This year’s July 14 is a special date because:
A. it’s Bastille day, vive le France!
B. it’s the 100-year anniversary of Woody Guthrie’s birth, vive le revolucion!
C. it’s National Can-It-Forward day, where canners across the country will seal some jars in solidarity, vive le Canvolution!
D. it’s my birthday, vive le cake!
E. all of the above
You got it right. The answer is E.
I’m so jazzed for this giveaway, a can-tastic (yes, I just went there) prize pack from Ball Canning paired with my good friend Marisa’s first (and very fine) book, Food in Jars: Preserving in small batches year-round. This is the perfect prize for newbies and old hats alike. And if you already have a canning set-up in place, then wouldn’t the Ball kit be a nice prize for an aspiring canner in your life?
You’ll get this 21-quart canner pot that includes the rack:
And this utensil kit (half-filled jar of jam not included):Aaaaand a copy of this great book:
The Food in Jars book is every bit as delicious as the blog by the same name, but tactile, with a sturdy hard cover and beautifully printed pages to turn. I had the pleasure of seeing the galleys for this book when Marisa visited in November of last year, and I must say, Running Press did a lovely job putting this book together. Moreover, Marisa’s recipes are simple and straightforward yet incredibly inventive with flavors. This book reads like afternoon tea with Marisa, like you’re sitting at her kitchen table and she’s pulling out jar after jar and telling you about each of them.
I’m especially excited to make her cranberry ketchup (must use last year’s fruit in the chest freezer!) and intrigued by the cantaloupe jam (hello exotic Creamsicle). I like the inclusion of other recipes, the non-canned goods and gifts you can put in jars, too. There’s a cinnamon vanilla sunflower butter that sounds delightful!
I just love how Marisa reminds us that canning is totally on our terms, that you don’t need tons of produce (and a car to drive it all home), a fancy kitchen or much equipment to make things you and your family like to eat. I hope with this giveaway you’ll find a way to make preserving your own, to wrap it into your life, whether it’s a small batch of dilly beans or a few jars of fig jam, or an entire closet tiled in the bounty of the seasons.
In order to get you your Canning-tacular prize pack in time for July 14, we’re running this giveaway through midnight CST, July 5, 2012. Enter by leaving a comment on this post, telling me What’s your favorite thing to put in a mason jar? Don’t forget to add your email address to the box on the comment form where I ask for it. No email address, no winner (because I can’t reach you).
Hey, while you’re at it, pop on over to Local Kitchen (through June 22) AND Punk Domestics (through June 20) for another couple chances to win Marisa’s book!

I love to make preserves from my garden fruit: rhubarb, raspberries, and gooseberries.
I love putting everything in mason jars - I recently put all dried beans and grains in them and sometimes just stand and admire my cabinets full of visible goodies. But my favorite thing in jars is homemade ginger-pear jam.
Dilly beans! And pickled asparagus. And pear butter. And raspberry jam.
We have been collecting a major bounty of heirlooms and multiple other varieties of glorious tomatoes from our organic "test garden" at our new house. We have been putting them into jars in various preparations (with herbs/garlic, peeled whole, diced, etc.) and don't have a pro setup as the one you're giving away since this is only our second foray into canning. With all the major garden booty, though, we are poised for an entire pantry set-up redo to house these jars! The money we've saved and the provisions we'll have for a few seasons will be so welcome!
Tough choice - either my Grandma's dilled okra or her fabulous fig preserves with candied lemon - I love the lemon so much I wish is was lemons with fig ; )
We buy our maple syrup from a local syrup man and it is in mason jars of all sizes. We go through a lot of syrup and have amassed a huge collection which I use for storing just about everything. Probably my favorite being home made granola, but yesterday I made some spruce syrup and it is sitting in a jar in the fridge and it is delicious.
This is my year to start canning so I am crossing my fingers for this!!
Rhubarb Chutney. I made some this weekend. Absolutely amazing.
Favorite thing to put in mason jars? Picked eggs! Boiled peeled eggs in a lightly spiced pickling brine and refrigerated = protein treats ready to eat any time.
My grandma's piccalilli!
Fresh, seasonal fruit followed by white wine. Cap, and leave in fridge overnight. The next day- fancy schmancy sangria cups!
Favorite combinations include peach, cherry, and strawberry. Blackberry-cherry is pretty fantastic as well.
I like to serve with cute colored straws on homemade crochet coasters (made from odd and end bits of fabric).
Currently it's spices. I've reorganized my spice cabinet using 4 oz mason jars. I buy my spices in the bulk aisle and these jars are the perfect size to store them. Plus they stack very neatly.
I love my mother's plum jam.
Lately my favourite use for mason jars has been for fermenting. I can get airlocks that fit a standard size mason jar, which I find works well.
I have *never* canned anything by myself (though my parents do applesauce and jam each year), so I'll say that my favorite thing to put in a mason jar is white peach sangria. YUM.
I love canning chiles. Anything spicy in a jar makes my heart swoon. I love making my own chipotles en escabeche and other hot preserves. I would love to win this! Thank you very much for the giveaway!
I love to put everything in mason jars! From dried grains and pastas, to jellies and jams. Great for drinking glasses too :)
Recently found Marisa's site and YOURS and am enjoying canning all of the summer fruits that we are getting in SC right now. Just finished blackberry jam, blueberry butter, dilly beans and pickles.
Thanks for the giveaway chance!
Applesauce! Love canning applesauce.
I have been making pickles like crazy this year. The kids can't wait to pop open a jar and devour them. As soon as the okra is ready, that is next. And I plan on making jalapeno and habanero jelly.
apricot jam - fresh apricots from the farmers market, just a little sugar, and it's like eating fresh apricots all year!
My favorite use for canning jars is for bottling my homemade kombucha but truth be told I use canning jars for holding nearly every food item in my kitchen both perishable and non perishable.
At this point, the only thing I've ever put in a mason jar is a drink when I'm out of cups! So hoping to get into canning!
I just did pickled mushrooms for the first time so that's my current fave. But every year I come back to watermelon pickles. Hard to pick just one!
Apple Butter is my favorite!
I would be a newbie canner so I will say my grandma's grape jelly - not that the jelly is all that amazing, but the memories of making it with her when I was little are priceless.
I make yummy freezer jam every summer with fruits from our garden and the farmers market.
I grew up watching my Mom can lots of things, but have yet to can anything myself, I have been wanting to learn.
