Can-It-Forward 2013: Ball Canning Giveaway

For the second year in a row, I recieved a lucky visit from the pear fairy! This year’s delivery happens to be timed just right for my contribution to National Can-It-Forward Day on August 17!

Communal canning is something I love doing; see previous years’ parties here and here. This year NCIF day doesn’t fall on my birthday (like it did last year), so I’m hosting a pear canning class here in Austin, Texas with the amazing org Women.Design.Build. We’ll be tweeting along with canners across the nation with the #canitforward hashtag while pear buttering and brandying pears deep in the heart of Texas.

In celebration of all things preserved, Ball has offered up a Canning Utensil Kit & free case of any size jars to 3 lucky HGGH readers!

Think about sharing the kit with a hopeful canner if you already have a canning kit, and I’m sure you’ll not have any trouble thinking of what to do with a free case of jars.

View restrictions and enter via the widget below.

Austinites can join me at these two events on August 17:

  • 9:30-11:30 Free peach jammin’ demo and tasting at the Cedar Park Farmers’ Market, come by to sample and pick up tips for small-batch jam making and other preserving projects. Lots of great giveaways including a canner pot, canning utensil kits, cases of jars, and much more! (We’ll have the same demo and celebration with giveaways on August 18 at Mueller Farmers’ Market from 11-1, too!)
  • 1-4p Pear preserving class with Women.Design.Build. This intimate class will provide participants with an extensive understanding of waterbath canning with a focus on preserving pears (pear butter and brandied pears)! Attendees will go home with a jar of each project and a recipe/methodology packet. Sign up via link above.

Both events will have lots of great canning and jar giveaways thanks to Ball Canning & Recipes!

Disclosures: Jarden Home Brands has offered up these kits and jar coupons at no cost to me. Jarden sponsors my preserving classes throughout the year by providing an in-kind donation of jars. I personally support this brand and am thrilled they’ve stopped using BPA in the lid sealing compound.

I am VERY new to canning, but now that we are moving into our first house and I will have the space, it's definitely a project I want to get into!

I've been canning for a couple years now, pretty much jjust basic stuff. I want to learn different ways to preserve the veggies in my garden. I have green beans, sugar snap peas, carrots, peppers and tomatoes this year.

What do I like about canning? Gotta do something with all these tomatillos that erupted in my back yard.

Pears and apples are my favourites of canning season! I can't wait for everything to be ready at the local FM.

I am just learning how to can, and need all the help I can get! There are so many wonderful projects out there -- I look forward to trying all of them!

I love canning & preserving. Very eco-friendly & money-saving. Plus I loved having the Value-added food. My husband just made some pickles since our cucumbers are ready for harvesting. Next up I want to make some Fresh Tomatillo Salsa (Chile Verde).

I'm trying out a bunch of new recipes this year, so extra canning jars would be great! And I have friends who would like the canning equipment.

I love extending the harvest and having foods that are better than anything I can buy - all year!

My garden has just started being fruitful so I'm up to my eyeballs in tomatoes, jalapeños, and cucumbers... Looks like tomato sauce, pickles & salsa are in my future! I just started canning this season and I love it! Can't wait for the next canning experience.

What a great idea to host a canning party! We're doing it too after we pick blackberries this Friday... I've almost always done my canning in groups and am looking in my area for a club or organization to join to start trading preserves as well.

I'm just starting on my canning this year! I discovered tiny baby cucumbers at the farmer's market, they almost looked like grapes, and I knew I had to make pickles with them!

Now I'm looking forward to canning more farmer's markets finds as harvest season creeps up!

Love seeing all of the lovely jars lined up ready for me to enjoy the bounty of the summer in the deep mid winter!

Love to stock the cupboard with peach amaretto jam and applesauce (not together in one recipe!)

I'm just learning how to can. I remember watching my Mom make apple butter and can when I was little. Was never allowed to help. 30 years later and she is finally teaching me.

I love the satisfaction of things I make myself. The ping of the sealing jars is like music to my ears at the end of a long, hard day of work. Worth all the effort! And next winter when the snow flies we can enjoy all the things we sealed in those jars.
