Can-It-Forward 2013: Ball Canning Giveaway

For the second year in a row, I recieved a lucky visit from the pear fairy! This year’s delivery happens to be timed just right for my contribution to National Can-It-Forward Day on August 17!

Communal canning is something I love doing; see previous years’ parties here and here. This year NCIF day doesn’t fall on my birthday (like it did last year), so I’m hosting a pear canning class here in Austin, Texas with the amazing org Women.Design.Build. We’ll be tweeting along with canners across the nation with the #canitforward hashtag while pear buttering and brandying pears deep in the heart of Texas.

In celebration of all things preserved, Ball has offered up a Canning Utensil Kit & free case of any size jars to 3 lucky HGGH readers!

Think about sharing the kit with a hopeful canner if you already have a canning kit, and I’m sure you’ll not have any trouble thinking of what to do with a free case of jars.

View restrictions and enter via the widget below.

a Rafflecopter giveaway

Austinites can join me at these two events on August 17:

  • 9:30-11:30 Free peach jammin’ demo and tasting at the Cedar Park Farmers’ Market, come by to sample and pick up tips for small-batch jam making and other preserving projects. Lots of great giveaways including a canner pot, canning utensil kits, cases of jars, and much more! (We’ll have the same demo and celebration with giveaways on August 18 at Mueller Farmers’ Market from 11-1, too!)
  • 1-4p Pear preserving class with Women.Design.Build. This intimate class will provide participants with an extensive understanding of waterbath canning with a focus on preserving pears (pear butter and brandied pears)! Attendees will go home with a jar of each project and a recipe/methodology packet. Sign up via link above.

Both events will have lots of great canning and jar giveaways thanks to Ball Canning & Recipes!

Disclosures: Jarden Home Brands has offered up these kits and jar coupons at no cost to me. Jarden sponsors my preserving classes throughout the year by providing an in-kind donation of jars. I personally support this brand and am thrilled they’ve stopped using BPA in the lid sealing compound.

Pears!! I need to start harassing the house down the street with the pear tree that never gets picked--watching them ripen and fall breaks my heart. Great giveaway!

I've actually been eyeing those little measuring tools for a while, though they aren't sold separately. I work with a community fruit-picking organization, who I'd probably share the other tools with.

I would love to can more- I love the idea of preserving summer bounty through the winter months!

I always love making homemade jam, but I don't do it nearly enough. I think would provide some good incentive to do so!

I would love to make strawberry preserves!!

I have been canning for years and would share my love of canning with others!

My next food preservation project is probably the cucumbers. I don't think anyone is going to get to them in time to eat them fresh, so I'd better get them pickled. I'm also waiting on the nasturtium seedpods to make capers.

I just picked my first pears of the year yesterday! Time to get canning so I have organic baby food for my little one when she starts solids in a couple months!

My neighbor moved away to his other house - he told us we can have all we want of his two pear trees!! I can not wait! Pear relish, pear jelly, all kinds of delicious treats!!

I love canning. This would be an awesome giveaway to win. My mom used to can pears, however I haven't yet. I think you inspired me to do so.

I LOVE the lime green!! Just started my fall garden! Here's to hoping I have a new set to can all the goodies this one will bring!

My husband planted a much larger garden this year than in the past and it is flurishing . I have had a blast putting up our bounty and knowing how good it is going to be this winter to enjoy. Next on my agenda is Balsamic Cherry Tomato Conserve and dehydrated cherry tomatoes - we are a little overwhelmed by the cherry tomatoes right now!

I am an absolute novice to the canning process, but we have both a pear tree and a couple of Italian plums in our yard that are big producers. I would adore to be set up to can these babies!

I just started canning and while I inherited a ton of pint jars I have been buying other sizes because sometime you need bigger/smaller. I would love to also have some of the specialized tools! Love your tips!

Haven't done as much canning this year for some reason, but at least that has given me time to catch up on eating all of last year's stuff!

I'm just starting to learn how to can, so this would definitely come in handy! :D

Alas the squirrels have left only one pear on our tree -- I will have to buy some more to make chutney. Pickled beets are also on the agenda.
